Am I Ugly?

Am I Ugly?... NO You're not, you're beautiful!
Loyal readers of my blog know that the Greek Girl has been known to temporarily lose her filter from time to time.  Well, I have to warn anyone who decides to read further:

WARNING:  Help, my filter has fallen off and I can't pick it up! That's because my noggin erupted today when I was on Yahoo and I read about the viral "Am I Ugly" videos.
This epidemic is so sad - and yet, so insane at the same time. It really makes my Greek ears bleed.  Is anyone shocked that we have literally an entire generation of young girls and boys growing up with serious self-esteem, image, values and more problems than I can even begin to list here?
Why on earth are these kids growing up so messed up, confused and losing their childhoods? Jeepers, I can't think of one reason.  The reason is, because I can think of a bajillion examples of such positive messages and images for them.  I mean with some top-notch tv shows instilling morals and values into their impressionable young noggins - I can't imagine why they would be so insecure and broken (yep, that was as sarcastic as it sounded.)  Let's have a little look see at a little list of  their favorite influential shows: American Idol, America's Got Talent, The Voice, So you Think you Can Dance, Dance Mom's, So You Think Your Mom Can Dance (coming soon, I'm sure) Toddler's and Tiara's, The Jersey Shore, My Super Sweet Sixteen, Keeping Up with the Kardashian's, Ice Loves Coco, The Girl's Next Door, Khole and Lamar, Kourtney and Kim Take NY, Kendra, Scouted, Bridalplasty, The Dance Scene, 16 and Pregnant, 15 and Pregnant, 14 and Pregnant, 13 and Pregnant, A Kardashian and Pregnant, Teen Mom, I Just Want My Pants Back, America's Best Dance Crew, Jackass, I Used to Be Fat, I Used To be A Fat JackAss, I Used To be A Fat Jack Ass Now I'm Just A Kardashian, Made, The Real World, Mob Wives, Single Ladies, Basketball Wives, FootBall Wives, Boring Golf Wives, Love and Hip Hop, The Real Housewives, Where's My Record Deal Mr. Bricks, need I go on?.....
Oh, and let us not forget the Grammy's this year.  Was it just me or did anyone else have to turn off the TV because Nicki Minaj's performance (if I dare to use that word to describe what she did) burned their eyeballs out?
What on EARTH are we telling kids - and adults even for that matter today?  Has anyone really stopped to ponder this, or do they just not give a crap? Why don't we all just throw up our arms in defeat and join Mr. Bricks at McDonald's for a plate of McRibs and celebrate the decline of our society. What shows like this tell people - whether you want to admit it or not, is that if you do not get on TV, if you do not get "famous"- for literally any reason, then you have no value.  If you do not look a certain way, wear a particular size, wear the right clothes, listen to the right music, do your hair right, and on and on and on - then you have no value.  What is being pushed down the throats of the American public at large is a big giant truckload of Muckery if you ask me.
By perpetually pushing this "you must be famous" gotta get a "viral video" agenda, the entertainment media are literally squashing the heart and soul of an entire generation. Where are the future Dr's, lawyers, rocket scientist's, politicians, engineers, teachers, firemen, police officers, airplane pilots, astronauts, entrepreneurs? For crying out loud a good chef makes over $100,000 per year.  Why, why, why is it that everyone wants to be famous? And why are so many young girls loosing their way and growing up with so many insecurities, hurts and a great big giant gaping void? Well,  the Greek girl is going to tell you why... it's because they are looking to people like the Kardashian's, Nicki Manaj, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, MTV, Snooki and her slick Jersey Shore cast/bed mates to measure themselves to. Young girls are listening to the words and messages in their songs, watching their videos and their little coconuts are jammed full of confusing messages. So much so that teenage & pre-teenage girls are turning to posting these disturbing videos on YouTube asking if they are ugly.  As Lucy would say, GOOD GRIEF CHARLIE BROWN!!!!

Example: Has anyone ever really listened to the words to "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry?  Mind you, she spoofed Rebecca Black in the video and she even invited the 13-year-old to perform the song with her on stage at a concert this summer. Now I don't know where little Rebecca's mom was, but if she even had only half of her noggin working properly she would not have allowed her daughter to perform that song with Katy.
Think my Greek nogggin has quit working? Not yet -- just check this out, you'll see what I mean...
Lyrics: "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry
There's a stranger in my bed,
There's a pounding my head
Glitter all over the room
Pink flamingos in the pool
I smell like a minibar
DJ's passed out in the yard
Barbie's on the barbeque
There's a hickie or a bruise
Pictures of last night
Eended up online
I'm screwed
Oh well
It's a black top blur
But I'm pretty sure it ruled
Last Friday night
Yeah we danced on tabletops
And we took too many shots
Think we kissed but I forgot
Last Friday night
Yeah we maxed our credit cards
And got kicked out of the bar
So we hit the boulevard
Last Friday night
We went streaking in the park
Skinny dipping in the dark
Then had a menage a trois
Last Friday night
Yeah I think we broke the law
Always say we're gonna stop-op
Whoa-oh-oah
This Friday night
Do it all again
This Friday night
Do it all again
Trying to connect the dots
Don't know what to tell my boss
Think the city towed my car
Chandelier is on the floor
With my favorite party dress
Warrants out for my arrest
Think I need a ginger ale
That was such an epic fail
Pictures of last night
Ended up online
I'm screwed
Oh well
It's a blacked out blur
But I'm pretty sure it ruled
Now call me old fashioned, but I just don't think a song about hmm let's see, a menage a' trois, drinking, getting arrested, skinny dipping, not knowing what you did because you were so wasted is really a song that any thirteen year old should listen to, or sing on stage for that matter. just sayin. When I was that age I was writing and singing songs about kittens, unicorns and fairies....and I hadn't even met Mr. Bricks yet!
I have a message to young girls everywhere.  STUFF YOU EARS FULL OF COTTON BALLS, and stop looking to these seriously misguided people for your value and self-worth.  You are perfect just the way you are, no matter who you are, how old you are, how skinny or fat you are, what kind of family you come from, and no matter what you look like.  How do I know you are perfect?  Because you are God's creation - and he does not make junk.  Each and every one of us has value, we all have talents, and abilities unique to each of us.  We are all special, regardless of what TV tries to make us think we need to "be" in order to be special.  You are perfect just the way you are.  So shine, be you, and do not let anyone put out your fire.
I wrote my newest song "I Don't Even Care" because I was tired of people telling me what I was supposed to do or be in order to be successful in the music industry.  I've been at it a long time, and I have still not yet achieved my goals.  However I will not let anyone stop me from being myself while on my way to where I am going.  I am me, just the way I am, and if the entertainment industry does not like it, well.... They can just kiss it.  What I am saying to young kids everywhere is NO YOU ARE NOT UGLY!  You are perfect just the way you are.
Please watch, listen and share:

Before They Were Rockstars

Even Lady Gaga had a past before her fame
One of my favorite things people say to me is, "Don't forget me when" or "Oh great, I can say I knew you when."  Or like what I call pre-recognition which is when I go into a public place and I see people look at me like they recognize me or something. The reason is because to me I feel like they see something in me that means I will one day be "there" and have made it.  The trick is getting there.  We are all on a journey in this life and none of them are exactly the same. Just like none of us have the same fingerprint we all have just as unique a path in life.
Then there are the questions that really get me like when people say to me, "Why don't you get on American Idol" or "you should be on the X-Factor" and my favorite, "You should call Ellen Degeneres.  I hear she is always looking for new music and even has her own record label. Maybe she can put on TV like that Bieber kid."  Then I am left standing there like a deer in the headlights thinking, "Really? Really? Thanks I never thought of that, thanks for the tip" and of course I have to hold my breath and count to 10 before I either flip my Greek Noggin as I play the scene in my head as I grab the person and shake them profusely.
So, because these two sets of questions seem to be what I hear most of when it comes to my overall career I wanted to talk about what it means to be an overnight sensation.  So welcome to Ava's Before they Were Rock Stars 101.
Each and everyone of us know, or at least I hope we know, that before anyone becomes famous and successful as a celebrity rock star they all were something before they hit it.  They all (aside from rebecca black and Justin Bieber) had to have their share of no's and tons of rejection and of course failures.  It's like Thomas Eddison said, "I have not failed; I've found 10,000 ways that won't work."  So, most of us have to work to get to the top.  Or if you are super lucky or fortunate like Justin Bieber or even Brittney Spears to have had parents who helped make it happen or of course have the money to know the right people... otherwise it takes a bit of struggle to get to the top.
I know some will be surprised but even Lady Gaga aka Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta had her failure before her fame.  She was signed to a label and dropped, then picked up and now she's everywhere.

The Goo Goo Dolls... they will never ever leave my ipod.
Take the Goo Goo Dolls (one of my very favorite bands of all time).  Back in the 80's my chiropractor who now cracks my back actually opened for them with his own band.  He was shocked to hear that they actually made it as he thought they were terrible back then.  They were about to hang it up before some college radio station out in California picked up one of their songs, "Name" and the rest is history.
Look at Garth Brooks.  He was washing dishes and working odd jobs in Oklahoma for years to pay for his back and forth trips to Nashville TN.  He was told "no" by so many labels then finally one day, after x number of years he became the highest grossing artist of all time. He has had more number one hits than I can remember.
Shania Twain is considered still to be one of the most beautiful and sexy country singers of all time.  She is also one of the highest grossing artists of all time as well.  Yet before she even hit the stage she was living in her car. That woman literally walked on broken glass to get where she is, she is one tough cookie.
So, unless you are fortunate enough to have the $100+k investor who is willing to back your music project and walk you into Universal or Sony, you have to be on a Reality TV series, be a viral YouTube sensation or do it the old-fashioned way, like me.  The reason I say this is that someone recently was misinterpreting where I was in my career.  Yeah, I have nice social media presence but all of what people see is because I am blessed to have a sweetheart who supports all of my dreams.  He literally creates everything (almost) for my music career.  So it's not like I have a machine behind me.  It's quite literally just the two of us.
That is why when people are asking about my Kickstarter Campaign I find they are confused.  Many are surprised to find out that I am not sitting in my mini-mansion counting my zillion digital downloads.  Nope, not yet at least.  But what I am doing is connecting with my fans the best I can.  It takes a lot of money and hard work pushing through this challenging career as a singer.  So, when I was given the opportunity to record my "first" true album that captures me to the fullest extent I jumped at the chance.  That is why I created this campaign.  This campaign will give me the chance to finally have the one album of songs that I really feel will catapult my music career to the next level.
So, it's essential that all of my fans, friends and family get behind me and pledge even as little as $1 toward this project.  Without having this project funded, I will have to pay all out of pocket to put this album together.  Unfortunately I don't have a financial backer and I am not on a record label.  So it will take a lot longer to get this project done.  So, if you truly are a fan and you really want to see me get to the next level and trust me when is say, I want to pay it forward, then I need you to get behind me to Kickstart my album. Then you can actually say, "I knew her when" and I can say, "I won't forget you when I get there."

Girls Kick Butt

We live in a world that is called, "A man's world".  Well, I have to ask, who actually believes that?  Seriously, just look at the way this world works.  Really.  Take a look. You have the one thing in the world that I hate more than anything the - s-p-i-d-e-r - that actually kills it's mate, the mate being the "male" after they eh-hem (censored).
Only in the "human" realm are women more colorful in presentation than anywhere else in nature.  The way I see it, we women rule the roost.  See, we've got the men pegged.  What a better deal exists than this?  We send them out to work, for us, protect us, drive us, open our doors and most die before us.  (not that I wish that on anyone, but hey, it's true).
So I wanted to take a few minutes and point out some really amazing and cool girls that simply put, "kick butt"!.  (in no particular order of course).

Rosa Parks - A woman who changed a nation.
Everyone knows what it takes to stand against the opposition especially when your life is on the line.  Rosa Parks is not only a hero but she is an icon for all women for all time.  She truly is one true Kick-Butt kinda gal.  I see her as someone who is not afraid to take no for an answer and stare down the evil of racism.

Danica Patrick, Nascar's lone female driver.
As I said, we "live in a man's world." Well, Danica Patrick is not one to take that to the bank.  She is not only someone men dream about but she is one heck of a driver to boot. She has fought tooth and nail to compete in a sport entirely dominated by men.  Sure she had to bust chops to get there, but it was worth it as she is a true trailblazer.

Angelina Jolie - one of Hollywood's most powerful and sexy women.
Now I must digress, I have been told that Angelina must be one of the lost Aston girls as there are 5 of us and we do have some similar qualities (so I have been told, remember... the Greek Girl is a natural brunette after all).  But that's not why she's on this list. Simply put she rocks.  She hits it out of the park with every film she makes.  She really knows what it means to be a true iconic figure for modern pop-culture.  Let's just say, if I could, I would love to play the roles she plays.  She truly kicks-butt and takes no prisoners and is a humanitarian too, definitely my kind of gal.

Gabby Giffords - a true patriot who loves her country.
Gabby Giffords, a Congresswoman who reached one of the highest elected offices in the country was gunned down at a townhall meeting.  Now, she fights to come back and serve her country once again.  Truly inspiring and the definition of the word "will".  It takes a woman of courage and true conviction to do what she did.

Martha Stewart - an entrepreneurial power to be reckoned with.
What can be said about the Queen of pristine.  Ms. Stewart is just another one of our kick butt girls.  Why?  Why not?  For someone to go through what she did starting out as a model and working her way up to being a global entrepreneur who's brand is as iconic as anything under the sun.  Not to mention she made going to prison fashionable and came out stronger than when she went in.  Martha my hat is off to you for being a kick butt girl.

Bethany Hamilton - she can take a licking and keep on ticking
Okay, now some of you know how much I love the ocean and relaxing at the beach.  This girl, she takes it to a whole new level.  Not only does she kick butt at surfing but she does it with one arm!  Don't forget, it was taken from her in a horrific accident while attacked by a shark.  Hello?!? That to me is down right crazy!  For her to have the courage to get back in the water and fight to regain her status as a world renowned surfer is Kick butt!  Not only that but she is a positive role model too.  How cool.

Amelia Earhardt - The pioneer of iconic Girls who Kick Butt.
What else can be said about this amazing girl?  Most people, let alone girls don't just wake up one morning and say, "Hey let's fly around the world" and do it, but Amelia did just that.  Not only was it completely unheard of to attempt by most any pilot at the time, but by a woman no less?  Now that took some serious guts.  She paved the way for all of us girls to kick butt.  She is a role model and an amazing example of what it means to live your life to the fullest while chasing your dream.

The American female soldier
But of all those women who have aspired to do great things, there are no girls who kick butt more than the American Female Soldier.  With over 350,000 women who serve in the US Military, there is truly nothing more amazing that a woman can do.  These girls are true hero's who put their lives on the line every day.  They don;t do it for glory, they do it for the honor of serving, so you and I can live in freedom and peace here back home.  Now, that is what I call a girl who kicks some serious butt!
Then you got me... The Greek Blonde Girl.  I can't say I am on the same list as these women, (yet at least).  It is my desire to get such a place in history and yes even kick butt, make that kick some serious butt.  Now, yeah I do kick butt in my own way here and there and no I am not one to back down to a good challenge that's for sure.  But, like all these iconic women, none of them were able to do it all alone.  They all had to have a team of supporters and a lot more nay-sayers who said they couldn't do it.  That's like me.  That's how I feel I relate to them.  I look to girls like them who have faced lifes toughest challenges and the rough road that hasn't even been carved out for them.  They achieved their dreams.  They went for the gold and they won.
So often in life we can get caught up in the minutia of what we "think" really matters and don't realize they are in fact distractions.  So that is why we have to stay focused.  That is why we have to sometimes wear our heart on our sleeve and put our pride on the shelves.  Like me.  A lot of people I meet or talk to think just by the looks of what is going on, I am sitting here counting all my millions of downloads and CD sales.  I wish I were, but I am not.  It takes a lot to admit you need help and support from your family, friends and fans. Without them, everything in life I am aiming for would be irrelevant.  It is my goal to be a positive role model through my music and be a girl who kick's butt.  Otherwise you'll be left to wallow in the likes of the Kardashian's, the Katy Perry's and GaGa's of the world who all think it is super cool to prance around in your bra and undies...  Not on my watch ;D I sing with my clothes on, and I think that is super cool - just sayin.
So, if you want to help me kick some serious butt and achieve my dream, give me a kick @ kickstarter.com (you can watch the video to learn more).

Addicted to Addiction

Amy Winehouse 1983-2011
So I was eating lunch today and a friend who was with me ever so overly chipper says (in almost a celebratory tone), "So did you hear Amy Winehouse joined the 27 club?" I'm like "joined what, 27 what? How could she join a club, I thought she died?"... My friend looks at me as if I were dumb as a bag of rocks, then she replies "Yes she is and she also joined the 27 club, I'm surprised you of all people don't know what that is".  Then miss book of information proceeded to tell me what the 27 club was.  As dumbfounded as I was, I just had to come home and look it up for myself to see it in black and white.  Because honestly it just didn't make sense to me that anyone in their right mind would make up such a thing.  Warning Warning, this is when my filter was removed.
According to wikipedia "the 27 Club" consists of notable rock musicians who have all passed away in their 27th year.  In particular Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison & Kurt Cobain.  All of whom have some sort of controversy surrounding their deaths, all except Joplin that is... The "27 club" or the "Forever 27 club" also consists of other musicians who also died at age 27... (I for one want to live to be at least 107) and Amy Winehouse is the latest artist in this tragic string of coincidences...  Coincidence?  I think not.  Now don't go getting your pantaloons all in a bind.  But really, honestly what human being on the face of the planet living in a civilized nation mind you - does not at one time or another in his or her lifetime get the memo that as Mr. Mackey from my favorite show Southpark would say "Drugs are bad... mmkay".
Those of you who have been reading my blog a while know by now that I think our body is a miracle.  A miracle you should not abuse, period.  Of course I can understand that people have problems, no one unless you are Beaver Cleaver has had or ever will have a perfect childhood or life.  However turning to drugs is simply not the answer.  How could anyone with even a smidge of a brain cell in his or her noggin take drugs?  You know they are addictive, you know it is for sure going to cause a whole lot of muckery for you and for everyone around you, so WHY? Why - I ask?
Honestly can you imagine what music we missed because artists like the above mentioned tragically left this world so young? Personally I think it is very sad.  Sad that so many misguided people think it is OK to abuse and promote the fact that they take drugs.  I mean Lady Gaga stated in an interview that she smokes pot in order to help her be creative when writing songs?... Really? .... Really, come on, if you have to smoke a doobie to write a good song, then guess what, maybe you are not such a good songwriter afterall, and maybe you should possibly pay a good songwriter to do that for you.  So you don't:
A. give the impression to about a zillion of your fans that you think doing drugs is ok..
B. to be able to stay alive and continue living your dream of being an artist.
As for me....  I am happy to say that all I'm addicted to is coffee, and endorphins (God's medicine).  Yes that may sound all goodie two shoes and all but that's just how I roll. No matter what happens to you ever, there is no reason to turn to drugs, period.  Life is just not that bad no matter who you are or where you come from or what has happened to you.  Life is a gift, you should be treasuring & cherishing it.  Drugs are not the answer.  If you are naive enough to think it won't happen to you, think again.  Maybe go to wikipedia and take along hard look at the list of gifted musicians who left this world far too soon.  No one is immune to the danger they posses.  Moments like todays lunch just reinforce for me the importance of what kind of an impact I make on people not only with my music, but in how I live my life.
All I have to say is that is is a sincere shame that Amy Winehouse & the rest of the 27 club left this world so soon and that they were not able to make the music that we all wish we would have heard.

Why Do Old People Expose Themselves

Note to Naked Old People... guidelines for speedo wearing see above.

So my two sisters come into town to visit me over the weekend. Despite the fact that three Greek Girls under one roof is crazy enough, imagine how it is when one of them decides "Hey, we should go to the beach". HELLO... can we say "Muckery Central?..." Sure it's all fun and games until we get there and see an 85 yr. old man in a speedo (and we're not talking about the Jack Lalane type either, and no it wasn't Mr. Bricks ~ Thank you God). This subconsciously leads us all to begin wondering if we look good in a bikini or not? Now of course you can stop asking because yes we do, but it's just a default chip programmed in every girls brain. Greek girls have two of these chips - one for each side.... one for the Baklava and one for the spinach pie - just sayin.

On with the story.... besides the fact that my one sister's psychotic dog, (yes I did say psychotic people, it was actually eating the wall while we were gone) was at home unattended terrorizing my own four fur-kids. Oh to be a fly on the wall at the doggie party... So there we were, sitting there all comfy, blanket down, snacks and iced happiness ready to go, chairs properly positioned to bake ourselves into a golden spender (yes we were wearing sunscreen - no it wasn't olive oil - or made from olive oil extract) and BAM there it goes again. But this time it wasn't a man it was a woman.... wearing a thong bikini old enough to be my grama and lets just say on the very heavy side, she could have been on the senior version of the Biggest Looser ~ just sayin. So just as we blink... we happen to notice that she has not one but two tattoos larger than my head on each side of her butt. No I'm not kidding people. Then comes the highlight of the day: its' a toss up between the super skinny swimmer guy who decides he's gonna take a shower and expose himself in the public sprayer to remove the sand or.... the woman who dove into the water and had both boobs flop out of her top and proceed to act like nothing was wrong. No guys it was not Gisele Bundchen.

Now I'm not saying I don't love old people nor appreciate them, because I do. I adore my yaya and my grama in heaven, and I even sang for nursing homes after classes when I was in high school :D However... What is it about some older people who do not seem to get it that it is not kosher to wear less than Lady Gaga on the beach. I know they say less is more, and this is most often the case, but not so much when you have not kept away father time by taking excellent care of your miracle body like Jack Lalane. Anyone who knows me knows how much I adored the guy and if you are old and you look like that, be my guest wear what you want.

In the words of one of my other fitness hero's Tony Horton "Aging Schmaging, you can get all old and crotchety, or you can be in shape." I donno about you, but I'm going for the latter. Thus my working out like a machine.

Have a blessed day & don't forget the sunblock!

Who Has the Most Likes On Facebook

My facebook Music Page. Have you liked it yet? If not click here

There is no doubt that social networking has revolutionized the way most of us live. I know that is true, otherwise blogging like this would be like the old dust bowl days days before the early part of 2003. That's when the world was introduced to the two most popular blogging sites, WordPress and Blogger. Back in the old days people wrote the crap that was in their noggin into a little book with a lock and key so no one else would see it.

But now, the more people who read the crap from your noggin, the more popular you can become. You can even get a TV deal based on how many people like the stuff that oozes out of your noggin. Not bad. Yes, by blogging and using social networking sites the entire world can now see how popular almost anything is, even a particular type of cookie like an Oreo.

Did you ever wonder how the Facebook page for your band, store, club or favorite cookie stacks up against the millions and millions of other pages on Facebook? Well, there's an app for that! Click here.

As of today May 29th, 2011 here are what pages the 500 million Facebook users "like" the most.
