He's Back

I was kinda hoping he wasn't going to visit this year...
I was kinda hoping he wasn't going to visit this year...
Just when I thought we might get to skate through the winter without any major snow events, it looks as if my fantasy winter forecast may just have a rude awakening. In case you missed it, the weather experts are saying Old Man Winter is about to rear his ugly head and dump what's touted as "historic" amounts of snow on the North East in the next few days. This in and of itself enough to make me want to grab the Mister., the furkids, and flip flops and head south for the winter. Add this onto the muckery of late and you have a full blown chaos factory. What kind of chaos?...
Well it all started like this. My Yaya went to be with the Lord recently. So we traveled a few hours north to attend the memorial service and visit family. Sad yes because she will be missed by everyone, but also happy because she was such an inspiring and kind woman who touched so many people in her ninety years on this earth. She immigrated from Greece as a young girl of twenty two years of age and lived what really was the American Dream. She waited in line, went to school and learned to read and write English and then passed her exam to become an American citizen. She married her true love, raised three wonderful children, worked hard, never demanded anything from this country, and never took a penny she did not earn. As my uncle Chris so eloquently stated... a sharp contrast to whats going on in our country today.
Spending time with family to reflect and honor such a wonderful woman was enough. Grief as many have experienced can be hard. I found happiness though the day of the memorial, the morning was cold and snowy. When we came out of the luncheon at the church the skies we bright blue with blazing sunshine. The neatest part of this was my Papoo had passed just over a year earlier and he was obsessed with the weather. He was always talking about the weather and it was almost like they were giving everyone the sign that they were together and happy with Jesus.
So Saturday rolls around and it's time to pack up the car and go home. We stopped for a hot cup of magic a la Dunkins for the road and off we went. We get not thirty miles from town when all of the sudden while driving down the highway the cruise control shuts off and this yellow coil looking do-dad light comes on in the dash. The car starts to slow down and acts as if it is not getting any power from the accelerator. I'm thinking "What in the heck in the world is happening on with our 2013 German tank aka VW Passat TDI"? Normally I'm gushing to everyone about the 40+ mpg we get, how we just love love love our TDI, and how we can get from NY to FL on two tanks of diesel. Saturday night however, I was singing a different song.
After much sputtering, shaking, the coil light going off never to go back on, then the  engine light coming on, and a terrible wind whistle noise coming from the engine which eventually led to a burning smell, and three calls to roadside assistance, turning the car off and doing everything they told us... We found ourselves stranded in the middle of rural upstate NY on a cold dark side road with not one, not two, but five furkids in the car with us. Thankfully we were only thirty miles from family who came to rescue us and our belongings while the tow truck took Paul Passat off to the nearest VW dealer. Where it will sit until Monday morning when the dealer opens. After getting to safety lo and behold we discovered we are not the only ones this has happened to. The internet is full of people who had the exact same thing happen. The cruise control turns off while driving and end up just like we did. It turns out, in many of these cases it is the turbo blown and engine as well.
You can bet your bottom dollar that this Greek girl is going to be on the phone with VW ASAP. Especially since our car has only 25,000 miles on it, is under warranty, is also a certified preowned, and worst of all it has been into several service departments for a "hesitation issue" with the acellerator. Where we described to them that it felt like it was not getting power when pushing gas pedal and a sputtering at times. Only to be told it was "nothing to worry about", that they did a computer update on the transmission that should take care of it. According to what we found on the internet there has been a known issue going on with the TDI's in this model year and we were never made aware.
So on top of sorting out trying to get our car fixed we will be trying to get home just in time to get a wallop from old man winter as he makes his 2015 debut. Frustrating yes, but at the same time all fixable. At the end of the day it's all a matter of perspective. I can complain because we got stuck on the highway at night, or I can be happy that we have a newer car that actually is under a warranty. I can be annoyed that there is a major snowstorm on it's way or I can be happy I'm still here to complain about it... No matter what is going on, the most important thing is that we live every day to it's fullest. Something that my Yaya did.
Times might not always be perfect, and yes they may even be hard. Every day there is something to learn and a new chance to plant seeds in the lives of those around us. So grab that shovel and get ready to welcome Old Man Winter back for what hopefully is a short stay.

Sick and Tired

The components of a muckery sandwich.
The components of a muckery sandwich.
I'm beginning to wonder if I have been cast in the sequel to the movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray.  Only this time the story focuses around a Greek Blonde girl who has been sick with Bronchitis and laryngitis for about a month that just goes on and on and on and on.  Can you guess what the title of this sequel is?.... "Bronchitis Muckery".
Seriously.  It all started when the yearly "Babysit Moms Dogs Episode" was coming to an end.  See my mom has to go away for training every year for her job with the Purple Heart.  So guess who watches her two fur kids?  Yup you guessed it....  Which was so much more fun this year since now instead of four of our own fur kids, we have five since we rescued little "Pepe" back in October.  Well as much fun as it was taking care of Seven, yes I did say SEVEN dogs for three weeks was... I was quite happy when my mom came to get her fur kids to take them home to her house.
That was until my mom and step dad walked in the house hacking their brains out.  So after a short trip out to eat they loaded up their fur kids and off they went.  The next morning... I woke up feeling a little off.  Wasn't really worried as mom said they had both taken a full week of antibiotics while she was away and they were "not contagious" anymore.  Yeah Right Mom!  Forward to the next day... I start to sound like a chain smoker and it all went downhill from there.
So here we are about a month later and not one but three trips to the Dr., three rounds of antibiotics, and after a chest x-ray to make sure I didn't have a pneumonia, now add to that steroids to help break up the muck in my chest, Nasonex nasal spray, Allegra, MucinexDM, and an inhaler... And I still feel like I have an iron lung.  Good grief!  The worst part is the Dr. even told me this time I have to hang up my sneakers until I'm better.  No more working out, too much stress on my body while it's trying to heal. ;( Total Muckery!
It was so bad that the other night while doing updates to social media I had a coughing fit while drinking Green Tea (I know you were expecting it to be Dunkins decaf) with my mac laptop on my lap.  At the same time the tinniest of the Aston fur kids "Itty Bitty" had a mini nervous breakdown when the Oreck Air machine made a zap noise from a piece of dust going into it.  Well during his little breakdown he jumped out of the covers up onto my lap knocking the tea where?  Onto my laptop of course.
Yeah it was pleasant.... So the following morning it was off to the Dr., pharmacy, then to Apple to replace the damaged parts.  Thank God it wasn't worse, I think it was saved by a new track pad and battery.  Time shall tell.
So after all this Muckery you could say Greek Girl is sick and tired of being sick!  I did get my voice back (not for singing yet) but the bronchitis lingers.  I'm am hopeful that this last round of medicine and being hunkered down with the humidifier almost 12 hours a day is going to get it out!  All's I'm sayin is July and 85 degrees can not come soon enough for me!
Moral of the story... keep the liquids away from the laptop.  Or better yet don't watch your moms fur kids ;D Either way, hope you have a smile and a beautiful day!

Out Like a Lamb

Time to see some Lamb weather - just sayin.
Time to see some Lamb weather - just sayin.
Most people who have been reading my blog for a while know one thing, I loathe the Winter.  What you didn't know that?...  Well now you do.  So why do you live in the North East Greek Girl?  I don't know and every year I keep asking myself the same question.
Is it just me or does March seem like it's taking entirely too long to get to the "Out Like a Lamb" part or what?!  Oh it definitely got the "Coming in Like a Lion" part right this year.  Let's see we've had one, two, three, nope make that Four snow episodes so far this March, and it is only March 17th.  Good grief, seems like every time the snow melts all the way off so I can finally see the grass again... guess what - more snow.  Oh goodie gumdrops.
So in case anyone can't understand why Greek Girl loathes the Winter, here are ten reasons why.
1. Too cold to go for a nice long date with my sneakers, the road and my iPod.
2. Too cold for Flip Flops.
3. Mud.
4. I have five furkids (that's dog for those who are not animal savvy). Therefore when five furkids come in from going potty ten to fifteen times a day... there are oodles of paw prints all over the house to clean up.
5. Did I say Mud?...
6. Shoveling snow.
7. Sleeping in the equivalent of an eskimo outfit and still being cold.
8. Outrageous $400+ utility bill every month of the winter.
9.  Greek Girl needs some Vitamin D.
10. Winter is too dang long... Time for some warm weather already!
Here's to March going "Out Like a Lamb" sooner rather than later.  ;D

How To Break Up With A Snowman

Mr. Snowman in Happier Times
Dear Mr. Snowman:
You were kinda cute when I first met you way back in November. In the beginning I liked you because you were a cool guy. Normally you do not come to New York City and visit me that early in the year, but after a long hot summer, I was really happy to see you again!
As always, you have a knack at making Christmas seem more like Christmas when you are hanging around during the month of December. I hope you liked the new red scarf. I knitted it myself for you. And I love how you joked with me about taking your eyes and putting them into my stocking for being a bad Greek Girl this year. You really know how to make me laugh Mr. Snowman. You we're kidding weren't you?
I was happy to have you spend New Year's Eve with me. It's always nice to welcome in the New Year with an old friend like you. I just wished we did not have to spend the entire night out side. I froze my noggin off. I do not understand why you did not want to come inside and enjoy the warm crackling fire I had built!
Normally you leave and come back a couple of times throughout January. However, this year you felt the need to stick around - every frikin day!!  Things changed during January between you and me. You turned very cold on me so I tried to break it off with you several times. But each morning I would open my blinds and there you were. Are you stalking me Mr. Snowman? I thought you would get the hint and leave when you would see Mr. Sunshine visit my house. I would even lace up my sneakers and go for a quick run with him. But no. When I came back from that refreshing brisk January run with Mr. Sunshine, to my surprise, you were still there.
As we wind down the month of February I honestly can say I am so over you Mr. Snowman. My love for you faded weeks ago. I can no longer even stand to look at you. What did I ever see in you? You need a nose job Mr. Snowman, that carrot looks stupid it has rotted and turned green. Over the past month your right eye has shifted. You now look like my manager Mr. Bricks with one lazy eye. I despise you Mr. Snowman.

In case you did not get the memo Mr. Snowman I am now in love with Mr. Sunshine. He is hot, you are not - just sayin'  I really want you out of my life! I hate you right now. I wish you would die Mr. Snowman.
All my love,
Ava

Watch Your Back Mr. Groundhog

Bill Murray in "Ground Hog Day"
I am sick of winter. It started snowing yesterday at about 8:00AM and it never stopped. I've been a Miss Greek Grumpy Pants since then because I am so over winter this year. And it's only late January.
"I do not like it when it snows. I do not like my frozen toes. I do not like when cold wind blows, I do not like that my house pipes froze." Ava Aston - Winter 2011
That white crap outside that is falling from the sky put a big damper on all of the things I had planned:
  • I can not just hop in my car and get a cup of Dunkin Donuts Coffee
  • I can not go for a nice 5  mile run with my iPod and sneakers
  • I can not go shopping at the outlets at the Woodbury Commons
  • I can not spend the Kohls' cash that is burning a hole in my pocket
  • I can not just let my dogs just outside to pee
I would love to be somewhere tropical right now. Somewhere with 85ยบ where I can be in shorts, flips flops and a t-shirt. But no, I'm rolling in New York looking like a wooly mammoth all bundled up in a hat, scarf, my fluffy blanket coat and mittens. That is so messed up. Here are 5 things I can think of that you can do in this weather:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
That's right nothing. Nadda, zip, zero!
Greek Girl Trivia: The first official Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1886 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Mr. Bricks say it was a very festive celebration, but he doesn't remember a whole lot since he was just a kid way back then.
I'm hoping that next Monday February 2nd Punxsutawney Phil doesn't see his nappy ass shadow, because if he does, I'll be the Blonde Greek Girl who will hunt down the fat little rodent with my daddy's rifle - he will be in my crosshairs - just sayin'
Blessings,
Ava
