One of the great benefits of doing what I do is having the ability to travel all over. Not just throughout the United States, but all around the world.
I take seriously this responsibility of trying to be a good Ambassador for America...maybe like a Miss Blonde Greek America in sneakers, if you will. In some countries I am the very first American some people personally meet. Yes, that could be a scary thought I know.
But not nearly as scary as if my manager Mr. Bricks was someone's first impression of an American. I think the French have a term for that. It's called an Ugly American. Not that Mr. Bricks is ugly as in a lazy eye sort of ugly way, but maybe they might see him ugly as in the way some French people see all Americans as Ugly - just sayin.' And I might add, not all French people see it that way. I consistently get a great deal of CD requests and fan mail from all over France and all of them love Americans.
My blog is truly a United Nations of Readers with multiple readers in many countries:
- United Kingdom
- France
- Russia
- India
- Japan
- Australia
- South Africa
- Philippines
- Germany
- Slovenia
- Greece (My dad better be reading my blog!)
- Canada
- Mexico
- Italy
- Switzerland
- Dubai
- Indonesia
- Columbia
- New Zealand
- Malaysia
- Singapore
I want to give them a good impression of life in America - so I try to keep my blogs funny, uplifting and positive! I am like the Blonde Greek American Welcome Wagon of the blogs on the internet. I will leave the mudslinging, back stabbing and name calling to the main stream media.
So I guess in my travels abroad I'm also looking to prove a point or two. While I am out wearing my imaginary crown and imaginary sash that reads, "Miss Blonde Greek America" I do not want the people of other countries to think that all American girls are what they are being spoon feed from American pop culture. Those American girls should not be role models for the impressionable minds of someone wanting to know about our way of life. I am purposely striving to be a different type of role model.
They should know that not all American girls go on stage in their bra and underpants like Katy Perry, Beyonce or Lady GaGa. They should know that not all American girls are party girls like Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, Lindsey Lohan or Paris Hilton, where releasing a sex tape or getting arrested is like winning an Academy Award or Grammy. Maybe that is why when foreigners meet me for the first time and spend quality time with me, they say I am not what they expected from a real American rocker chick. Listen folks, I am not saying I am special or better than anyone else, I'm not. I still put my shoes on like everyone else, one sneaker at a time. It's just I am conscious of what message I am sending out there by my actions, that's all.
While I would never want girls in this country not to have the new opportunities they are now given in sports, politics, education, military, the work place and in the arts, they can still go about it with dignity and class. Just like a beauty queen does.
I was never beauty queen material. Although, if I was, I feel I would have nailed the talent portion with my singing. However, I really never wanted to spend that much time in a big fluffy dress.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with girls wanting to do pageants, if they want to. I just didn't roll like that. And if they get a college scholarship out of it, or if they can travel around the globe like I do showing off a better portrait of what a real American girl is all about, then even better!
Blessings,
Ava

Great blog Ava! Thank you for being a good role model in a world where that concept has almost become extinct. A few weeks ago I was watching a child beauty pageant on TLC...I don't remember the name of the show, but it almost made me puke. It was sad to watch these little girls (babies) being displayed in front of hundreds of people. It wasn't cute and their little "attitudes" didn't help much either. :) Thanks again and keep up the great work!
